The new cat introduction process

What is your experience bringing a new cat home particularly if you have other cats?

Things with Neo have been going well, but he's not much of a lap cat or a cuddler. I do hope that changes in time as he gets more comfortable with us.

All 4 cats are getting along pretty well now although we did have the hissing at the start.

It could be faded memories, but I just remember bringing Zoey, Stormy, Finnegan and Domino into the mix as being easier, but they are all lap cats too. I guess I just want it all to be perfect NOW, but must realize these things take time!

Unfortunately I rent and only have room for one kitty and the day I adopted Cleocatra I realized immediately (much to my dismay) that she didn't like to be held. More than anything I wanted a cuddly lap-cat but it didn't matter because it was love at first sight!

Of course I think it depends on what a kitty's history was that determines behavior, so like you said it will just take time and patience. Even if Neo never becomes a cuddler, it's inevitable that in time he will become increasingly trusting and comfortable in a place that gives him nothing but love and protection, and that in itself is very satisfying!

(Besides, I think he'll come around soon. Underneath initial nervousness I see a softie! :-D)

How long have you had Cleo and I assume that she has never come around to being held?

I guess that shouldn't surprise me as I know other cats like that, it's just we've been fortunate to always have lap/cuddlers.

And he has come around a lot, he is more comfortable with us. I guess time will tell if he will be a lap boy!

yes, lucky you with THREE lap-kitties, lol!

Right, I've had Cleo 11 yrs. in October (she's ~13 y.o.) and in all that time ONCE she jumped onto my lap and stayed for about 10 minutes! And although I never give up trying, she'll allow holding for about 20 seconds maximum before she starts air-swimming. She does tolerate nuzzling while she's lying down, so she gets plenty of that! She also loves being brushed :)

We've been through the introduction process a number of times. The integration time really depends on the existing cats' personalities. Our oldest cat, who is 12, has never fully accepted our youngest (now 2), but they can co-exist and the younger one still tries to get the old guy to like her. We still have daily hissing and growling, but nothing beyond that.

I'd give Neo more time and he may turn into a lap cat. Our oldest wasn't a lap cat until around age 7 or 8; now I can't get him off my lap!
